For the month of July, we’re sharing information that illuminates the issue of teenage alcohol abuse in the United States. It may come as no surprise that alcohol is the most commonly abused drug in our country. What may be more surprising is that 28% of adolescents, ages 12 -17, currently meet criteria for an alcohol use disorder. “Use disorder” is a clinical way of saying, “there’s a reason to be concerned about your substance use.” Of that 28%, only about 10% of those teenagers receive treatment. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2013).
